How It Began

I entered real estate in 2014 with a genuine belief that property could create generational wealth — for clients and for the professionals who serve them.

What I found was an industry full of talented, driven people operating without the structured support they needed to grow. There was no clear pathway from entry-level practitioner to industry leader. You learned by doing, by watching, and by making mistakes that better education could have prevented.

By 2017, I had seen enough to act. I founded the Prestige Education Trust — a deliberate step toward building the educational infrastructure the industry was missing. Two years later, in 2019, that trust gave rise to The Prestige Academia, formalising our commitment to delivering real, practical education for property professionals.

Education has always been at the centre of what I do. I believe it is the key to unlocking lasting success — for individuals, for businesses, and for the industry as a whole.

Building the Practice

Alongside the education work, I built Prestige Property Group into a respected practice. In 2022, I became an active property investor — building portfolios for clients and for myself. That experience as a developer and strategic advisor gave me a ground-level view of what the industry actually demands from its professionals, and how far the education system falls short of meeting that demand.

I have worked across every layer of the property sector — sales, development, investment, advisory. That breadth shapes everything about how REUSA is designed.

What I Observed Over the Years

South Africa's real estate education landscape is deeply fragmented. Qualifications are scattered across providers with inconsistent standards, disconnected from industry practice, and often inaccessible to the professionals who need them most.

Entry-level practitioners receive minimal structured preparation. Mid-career professionals have few pathways to advance. Those who aspire to executive leadership in property have almost nowhere to go. The result is an industry where talent is abundant but development is inconsistent — where transformation is spoken about in boardrooms but rarely supported by the educational infrastructure needed to make it real.

I have sat in rooms with some of the most capable property professionals in the country and watched them struggle to articulate their value — not for lack of ability, but because no one had ever given them the framework to do so. I have seen young practitioners from townships with extraordinary potential walk away from the industry because the barriers to entry were too high and the support too thin.

These are not individual failures. They are systemic ones. And systems can be changed.

No Clear Entry Pathway

Aspiring practitioners enter the industry without structured preparation or mentorship.

No Mid-Career Development

Experienced agents have few formal routes to specialise, advance or lead.

No Executive Education

Senior professionals seeking strategic leadership development have almost nowhere to go.

Why REUSA Became Necessary

My involvement with SAYIPA deepened my understanding of how widespread these challenges were. As a member of the Executive Board and Director of Stakeholder Relations, I engaged with government bodies, professional associations, and industry stakeholders on the future of real estate education across the country.

What I found confirmed what I had already seen on the ground: the gap was not a local problem. It was a national one — and in many respects, a continental one. Africa's real estate sector is growing at a pace that our education system is not keeping up with. We are producing practitioners who are technically compliant but professionally underprepared.

REUSA was born from that recognition. If we do not build the institution ourselves — one grounded in African realities, African markets, and African ambition — we will continue to train our professionals for someone else's industry.

I have seen what happens when a young professional from a township gets access to the same quality of education as someone from a privileged background. The talent was always there. The opportunity was not. REUSA exists to change that equation — permanently.

A Clear Pathway From Entry to Leadership

What I am most proud of in the design of REUSA is that it creates a pathway — not just a qualification. A structured, intentional journey from the moment someone enters the real estate industry to the moment they are ready to lead it.

Too many talented practitioners in South Africa reach a ceiling — not because they lack the ability to go further, but because no one has built the ladder. REUSA is building that ladder. Our programmes are designed to meet professionals at every stage of their career: the candidate practitioner who needs a strong foundation, the experienced agent who wants to specialise, the developer who needs executive-level strategic thinking, and the leader who wants to shape the future of the industry itself.

When we invest in the education of real estate professionals, we invest in the quality of every transaction, every development, every community those professionals will serve.

Foundation

Candidate practitioners and new entrants building core competencies and regulatory knowledge.

Specialisation

Experienced practitioners deepening expertise in investment, development, finance, or law.

Executive Leadership

Senior professionals and aspiring leaders developing the strategic and governance capabilities to lead the industry.

The Long-Term Vision for African Property Education

REUSA is not a course platform. It is an institution — built with the same rigour, governance, and long-term vision that defines the world's leading professional education bodies.

Africa does not need to import its institutions of excellence. We have the talent, the markets, and the ambition to build our own. REUSA is designed from the ground up for the African context — not adapted from a European or American template, but built here, for here, with the full complexity and richness of the African real estate landscape at its core.

Africa's property sector is one of the most significant growth stories of the next century. Cities are expanding. Middle classes are growing. Infrastructure is being built. The professionals who will manage, develop, finance and lead that growth need an institution that prepares them for the scale of what is coming.

We are building with intention — not speed. Every appointment, every programme, every partnership is made with the long-term credibility of this institution in mind. In the years ahead, REUSA will pursue formal accreditation, deepen its industry partnerships, and expand its reach across the continent.

“Africa's real estate century is just beginning. REUSA exists to ensure that African professionals are ready to lead it.”

South African Real Estate Sector

Nomsa Nhlabathi is a South African real estate professional, investor, developer, and institution builder with more than 12 years of experience across the residential, commercial, and executive property sectors. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the Real Estate University of South Africa (REUSA).

Nomsa began her real estate career in 2014. In 2017, she founded the Prestige Education Trust, driven by a conviction that the industry needed a dedicated educational foundation. That trust gave rise to The Prestige Academia in 2019 — a formal institution delivering practical, industry-aligned education for property professionals.

In parallel, she built Prestige Property Group into a respected practice. In 2022, she became an active property investor, building portfolios for both clients and personally. Her work as a developer and strategic advisor across the sector has given her a comprehensive understanding of what the industry demands from its professionals at every level.

Committed to industry transformation, Nomsa became an active voice in national real estate education policy through her involvement with SAYIPA. Appointed to the Executive Board and serving as Director of Stakeholder Relations, she led engagement with government bodies, professional associations, and industry stakeholders on the future of real estate education in South Africa.

In 2024, Nomsa founded REUSA — the Real Estate University of South Africa — with a mandate to build Africa's first dedicated professional and executive education institution for the real estate sector. REUSA serves the full spectrum of real estate professionals: from candidate practitioners entering the industry for the first time, to experienced professionals seeking specialisation, to senior leaders pursuing executive education.

Her founding vision for REUSA is straightforward: every real estate professional in Africa — regardless of background, geography, or starting point — should have access to the education they need to build an exceptional career and contribute to an exceptional industry.

“We are not building a course platform. We are building an institution — one that will serve African real estate professionals for generations to come.”
